AUT’s roots trace back to the Auckland Technical School, established in 1895. It was initially focused on vocational education.

In 1989, the institution became Auckland Institute of Technology (AIT) as part of a national reform of polytechnic education in New Zealand, emphasizing practical and vocational training.

AIT was granted university status in 2000, becoming Auckland University of Technology. This transition marked a shift toward a broader range of academic programs and research opportunities.
